Review: The Flying Dutchman – Kemah Boardwalk

2/5 - (1 vote)

The Kemah Boardwalk is located on Galveston Bay a little South of Houston not far from the Johnson Space Center. In the recent past, road construction has made the area difficult to navigate, but the new roads are almost completed, so the traffic will be much improved soon.

The Kemah Boardwalk is owned by Landry’s Inc. which owns a variety of restaurants, such as DelFrisco’s Double Eagle Restaurant, Morton’s The Steakhouse, Chart House, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Landry’s Seafood, McCormick and Schmick’s and Saltgrass Steakhouse just to name a few. The property also includes a hotel and boardwalk rides and games. Abundant free parking is also available to those visiting any of the venues. The Boardwalk hosts many events for the community to enjoy; check their website for the event calendar. One regular event is live music in the quad in front of the hotel.

The Flying Dutchman has a nice outdoor patio in the back with tables. The restaurant has a nice view of the channel from the deck or from the inside through large windows. The decor has an upscale dockside vibe to it with large columns that give a pier look to it. Nets and shells adorn the walls to finish the look. The bar is along the right side of the restaurant across from the waiting area at the front so that customers can order a beverage while waiting for a table.

Once seated, my party ordered some drinks and appetizers. My son ordered a Banana Daiquiri, which I highly recommend if you like those types of cocktails. As an appetizer, we ordered some wrapped stuffed shrimp and jalapeno poppers.

My son ordered the seafood platter that came with one large fried fish filet, a stuffed shrimp, 2 bacon-wrapped shrimp, 4 fried oysters, fried shrimp, lots of french fries and some cocktail and tartar sauce for dipping. Yum!

I ordered the Seafood Fettuccine. It was AMAZING!! The creamy alfredo sauce in this dish was seasoned perfectly with tomatoes, green onions, mushrooms and spices. French bread is served along with this dish so that you can sop up every last bit of the sauce. So delicious!

My husband chose a healthier option from the menu. He selected the Broiled Seafood platter that consisted of a tilapia filet with Ponchartrain sauce, a crab cake, broiled shrimp and oysters embrochette served with some steamed vegetables. We shared the oysters embrochette, and they were absolutely delicious.

On this day we ordered two desserts to share. One was a New York Cheesecake plated on top of a plate full of strawberry sauce and piping of fresh whipped cream. It was almost too beautiful to eat. The other dessert was a Dutchman Sundae that was vanilla ice cream, salted caramel bites, and brownie bits topped with hot fudge. As you can see from the photo, no one could wait to dig into that. It Was so delicious.
