Thor Love and Thunder is actually one of the better Thor movies I have seen in a while. This Marvel Universe series takes the action to outer space and typically hhas somewhat corny humor. In the past, the humor has been a little bit too corny, but Love and Thunder creates a balance between the humor, action and underlying emotion throughout the plot.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Christian Bale plays Gorr, the god butcher, who is almost unrecognizable with all the makeup he wears for the character. Russell Crowe makes an appearance as Zeus. Tessa Thompson plays the King of New Aasgard and Taika Waittiti, who co-wrote the script, voices Korg.
The movie begins with Gorr and his daughter trekking through a barren land as the last survivors of their world. Hungry and thirsty, the girl dies and Gorr blames the gods for his beloved daughter’s death. The Necrosword leads Gorr to the oasis of Rapu, Rapu laughs at Gorr and tries to kill him, but the Necrosword finds its way into Gorr’s hand and uses Gorr to kill Rapu. Gorr vows to seek out all gods and destroy them with the Necrosword to avenge his daughter. Thor is alerted that other gods have been murdered all over the universe, He goes to New Aasgard to help defend it. When he arrives, New Aasgard is in the midst of a huge battle against the powers of Gorr. There he finds his former earthly girlfriend, Jane Foster, fighting as Mighty Thor with his former mantle, Mjolnir, the hammer. Gorr is defeated and escapes, kidnapping all the New Aasgard children. Thor, Jane, the King of New Aasgard and Korg travel to a convention of gods to warn them about Gorr and procure some help to defeat the god butcher. While in Omnipotence City, Thor and Jane rekindle their romance, but Jane reveals the reason why she has taken on the Mighty Thor persona. Not to give away too much, the remainder of the movie moves forward to stop Gorr from his evil deeds.
Thor Love and Thunder is a Marvel Studios property that is owned by Disney. The film was directed by Taika Waititi, who also voices the character of Korg in the movie and co-wrote the screenplay along with Jennifer Kayun Robinson. Production was supposed to begin in 2020; however, the film did not get under way until 2021 due to the ramp up of Covid 19.
Thor Love and Thunder received some harsh criticism from some professional movie critics, but honestly, I thought it was one of the better Thor movies in the Marvel series. I recommend it if you are already a fan and I will give it 4 out of 5 stars.
