Craft: Red Hat Contest

Rate this post

Recently, the assisted living center where my mother resides had a red hat parade. it was a fun idea, but my mother needed a red hat because she did not have one. Looking through my craft supplies, I decided I could easily make her one. Believe it or not, the hardest part was finding her a red hat! I finally found a red baseball cap at Michael’s, which was my 5th store in my search. I should have gone there first thing!

I had a bunch of floral options to choose from, so I selected some red flowers. First, I hot-glued two flowers on each side of the hat.

Next, I had a flat, black cat floral pick, which was really for Halloween. I removed the metal pick and hot-glued the cat between the flowers.

If you have ever seen pictures of ladies from The Red Hat Society, you would notice that many of the hats have purple accents. I looked through my ribbons in my craft stash and found a purple mesh ribbon roll. I measured about 8 inches of the ribbon. The mesh automatically rolls up on itself, so I pinched it in the middle of the little roll and cinched it with a white zip tie. Once the zip tie was in place, I cut off the excess of the zip tie and hot glued the mesh bow on the brim of the hat in front of the cat.

I wanted to give the hat some Fall flair, so I selected some Fall florals and leaves. I hot glued the leaves and flowers behind the flowers and the cat.

I still thought it needed a little something more. I had some Fall feathers and some cat tail florals that I hot glued on one side. It was just what it needed to finish off the look.

The only thing left to do was to somehow cover up the white zip tie on the purple mesh bow. I had some brown and gold vase filler that I purchased from Dollar Tree last year. They seem to rotate these fillers that are really just styrofoam balls that are decorated with paint and glitter. They really are pretty, so I hot-glued a few in the center of the mesh bow. It was the finishing touch that the hat needed.

This was a fun project that took me about an hour to complete. It was fun putting it together. My mother was absolutely delighted with the hat! Her caretaker sent me some pictures of her wearing the hat during the party. She said she made red velvet cupcakes for all the ladies who participated and served them pink sparkling apple cider. She said they all thought they were drinking champagne! All those who participated in the Red Hat Party had a wonderful time! That’s all that matters!
