I was amazed that there was a Sushi restaurant in Victoria, Texas. Victoria is a small town located an hour and a half Southwest of Houston. We had an opportunity to visit Victoria a few weeks ago and decided to try Yamato’s Sushi and Hibachi for lunch. The restaurant is located at 9104 N. Navarro Street in a strip center in front of Sam’s Club. Navarro Street is the main street in Victoria that runs from one end of town to the other. My son was very excited to know that he could get sushi in Victori as he is moving there to attend college. Sushi is one of his favorite food groups.
The restaurant is quite large and decorative with elaborate glass light fixtures in the ceiling and dark wood finishes. Some of the booths along the wall have beautiful wood partitions. The sushi bar is located on the back side of the restaurant in the center and is brightly lit. The hibachi station is through an open archway on the left side of the restaurant. The bar for drinks flanks the right side of the restaurant and matches the decor of the sushi bar.
We were seated at a booth in the center of the restaurant nearest to the entrance, so we ordered off the regular menu. It was lunchtime and the restaurant had quite a few people inside.
The menu was quite extensive, and we ordered some crab wontons as an appetizer along with our drinks.
The wontons came with a sweet and sour sauce. My son had never had wontons before, so he really liked these.
For the main course, I ordered the Mongolian Beef Bento Box from the lunch menu. My son ordered sushi and my husband ordered the Chicken Stir Fry Bento Box. The lunch option allowed for soup; they had a chicken mushroom soup on this day, which came out first. The soup was good, but I thought it was a bit too brothy.
The sushi came out next. It looked delicious. I am not a sushi lover, but this one tasted good. My son was kind enough to let me taste it.
The Mongolian Beef Bento Box and the Orange Chicken Bento Box came out last. The bento boxes came with some panko-crusted vegetables, fried rice, fresh fruit and a sweet and sour sauce. The flavor in these meals was on point, but they would have been better if they had come out a little hotter. The entree portion was only warmish.
I will go to Yamato’s again. My only complaint was the temperature of the food, but we are funny that way because we like our meal to be hot when it comes out. Usually, a simple request to bring out the food when it is super hot suffices, but we forgot to do that this day. I would give Yamato’s 3 out of 5 stars, but I bet it would be 5 out of 5 stars if we go back and make our request known. I think the Hibachi is worth a try.
