On the street level above the famous Riverwalk of San Antonio, Texas, right above the point at which all the restaurants are lined up, stands a German deli called Schilo’s Delicatessan. The deli opened about a 100 years ago and is quite popular in the area. Lunchtime finds Schilo’s very busy with a short wait. While waiting, customers can view the menu outside to save time at the table. I haven’t had a single item so far that I didn’t like. Not only does Schilo’s have deli sandwiches, it also has diner-type options on the menu with either a German or Texan flare. One thing is for sure, whatever you order, you will not leave hungry.
We were seated at a semi-table/booth near the front door. The floors are covered with small round ceramic tiles, and the walls are adorned with metal backsplash and pictures from the past. The booths and tables are dark wood. Glass cases align the perimeter where the deli meats used to be. Everything has an old art deco look from back in the 1920s.
We promptly ordered a beer flight for a sampling of some of the German and Texan beers. At the same time we ordered an appetizer for the table of fried pickles.
I love their menu. The selections on the menu have a German flare with a Texas twist. Back in the day, many people of German descent settled in this part of Texas. There are a lot of German names floating around Texas, so this is part of their Texas heritage.
For entrees, my son and I ordered a Reuben Sandwich with fries on the side. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy on the side, french fries and creamed spinach.
The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the portions are huge, and the food came out hot (an important feature for us). I give Schilo’s a 5 out of 5 stars, which is a good thing since Schilo’s is kind of an institution in downtown San Antonio. It’s steps above the Riverwalk, but out of the way of the hustle and bustle of all the tourists and other restaurants below it. If you are in San Antonio, give them a try. You won’t regret it.
