You can’t get much more basic than toast for breakfast. Sometimes, a simple piece of bread is all one needs to start the day. It is better than nothing, but it also serves a purpose if it is the only thing in the pantry the day before a trip to the store. Also, a slice of toast with butter is the first thing I reach for at the tail end of an illness. Dress it up a little; a slice of toast will become a delicious appetizer or dessert.

If you have the time and inclination, you can kick that toast up a notch by adding some toppings. Here are some of my favorite ways to eat toast:

Cinnamon Toast—My mother made this in the oven with butter and sugar on top and cinnamon sprinkled on top. The sugar caramelized under the broiler. When the cinnamon toast came out of the oven, she sprinkled on the cinnamon. I still like to make cinnamon toast this way. It is my go-to after a stomach flu and starts the day off with satisfaction and a little sweetness.

Egg in a Hole—Cut a hole in the center of the bread slice. Crack an egg in the hole. Bake at 350 degrees until you are satisfied with the cooked egg. Eat!

Toast with Poached Egg and Avocado Slices—Arrange sliced avocado on top of your favorite toasted bread. Guacamole is also a good idea if you have some. Place a poached egg on top of the avocado. You could also use a fried egg cooked to your specifications. A drizzle of sriracha sauce makes this yummy!

Toast with Peanut Butter, Honey and BananaIt can’t get simpler. Toast your favorite bread. Spread some peanut butter on top. Slice half a banana on top and drizzle with honey.

Omelet Toast—Make an omelet with your favorite fillings. Place the omelet on top of a slice of toasted bread. Add a slice of cheese and warm in the oven to melt the cheese. You can make the omelet the night before, so place it in the oven to warm.

Garlic Toast—Nothing beats a soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside slice of garlic bread with Italian food. On a Keto diet, I have to improvise. The best substitute is a slice of my favorite Keto hamburger bun toasted with real garlic and butter.

Ham and Egg Toast—This toast topping packs a hefty protein punch. Using sliced ham from the deli makes it an easy fix. Top with an egg, either boiled, poached, sliced, fried, or scrambled.

Bruschetta Toast—This toast topping is a twist on the popular Bruschetta appetizer. A mix of tomatoes, onion, and garlic is the perfect topping for a slice of toast in the morning.

Feta Cheese and Tomato Toast—This toast option is possibly the easiest. Slice some tomato and sprinkle the top with feta cheese. Sometimes, I place the toast under the broiler for a minute to melt the cheese a little.

Toast with Jam or Jelly – A classic that needs no explanation! Use any jam or jelly you like.

Toast with Nutella—Any brand of chocolate hazelnut spread on buttered toast in the morning will set you off on a good note for the rest of the day.

Toast with Cream Cheese and Apple or Pear—Fresh, green apples or pears shine with an explosion of flavor on top of cream cheese. Drizzled with chocolate sauce, this is more like dessert than breakfast.

Cheese Toast—Hello, my old friend! I used to eat simple cheese toast when I was a kid. Top a slice of toast with your favorite cheese and run it under the broiler for a few minutes. It’s so simple yet so good. Tastes are memories!

Caprese Toast—This is simply a slice of mozzarella or cream cheese with a slice of tomato or salad. You can eat it cold or heat so the cheese melts. Summer freshness in every bite!

Toast with Fruit—This one is a no-brainer! Spread cottage cheese or peanut butter over a slice of toast, then top it with your favorite fruit. Fresh berries are amazing for this combo!

French Toast—Sometimes, all a French toast needs is a little maple syrup drizzled on top. Sometimes a French toast must be decorated with bananas, blueberries and whipped cream. Just sayin’!

Toast with Almond Butter, Pear and Nuts—Creamy almond butter topped with fresh pear slices on a toasty bread is breakfast goodness in every bite. Sprinkle some pecans or walnuts on top for extra crunch.
