Steamed Asparagus with Shallots

Rate this post

Nothing announces the arrival of spring quite like fresh asparagus on your plate. When those vibrant green spears start showing up at the market, you know the season has officially turned.

Steamed Asparagus with Shallots is one of the quickest, easiest ways to celebrate it. In just minutes, the asparagus turns perfectly crisp-tender, maintaining its bright green color and fresh flavor. The delicate sweetness of sautéed shallots adds just enough depth without overpowering the natural taste of the asparagus.

This simple side dish is ideal for Spring gatherings, especially Easter dinner or any special occasion meal. When your oven and stovetop are already working overtime, it’s a gift to have a vegetable that comes together effortlessly while still looking elegant on the table. Fresh, light, and beautiful, it’s the perfect finishing touch to a seasonal spread.

1 large shallot, sliced

4 Tbsp. butter

1 bunch asparagus, trimmed

Salt and pepper to taste

1 lemon, zested

Heat some water in the bottom of a steamer. Place the trimmed asparagus in the top of the steamer.

Place the lid on top and steam the asparagus until vibrant green and crisp-tender. Thin spears may only take a couple of minutes to steam; however, thick spears may take 7 minutes or longer.

Meanwhile, melt butter in a skillet.

Add sliced shallots and saute until shallots are tender.

Remove the asparagus from the steamer to a serving plate. Spoon the shallots and butter over the asparagus. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Zest the lemon over the top of the asparagus. Serve immediately.
