Citizens across America are thinking about Independence Day early this year especially since everyone was hesitant to gather in the summer of 2020. Now that we are a little past the pandemic crisis, more people are looking forward to backyard BBQs and other summer gatherings this year. Inviting friends and family to enjoy some hamburgers on the grill while laughing and talking forms cherished memories while celebrating and appreciating our nation’s history.
Ghengis Khan and his warriors first introduced a raw meat patty when they invaded Russia in the 13th century. The Russians adopted this culinary meal, giving it the name “tartare,” but they added their own spices and ingredients to make it their own. Four centuries later, the Germans sailed back and forth to Russian ports, bringing the Russian tartare with them. During the 18th century, the citizens of Hamburg, Germany altered the tartare and flavored it with their own spices and regional ingredients into a cooked version which is what we know today but they called it “the Hamburg Steak.” American immigrants from Germany came to New York City and sold their “Hamburger” from vendor carts on the street.
The hamburger we know today has evolved over time as consumers added ketchup, vegetables and other toppings, making the hamburger one of the most popular meals in America. The hamburger has endless varieties that delight all those who partake of this traditional sandwich.
Ingredients
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
2 or more Tbsp. steak seasoning (I used a Keto brand)
1 cup chopped pecans
1 stick butter, softened slightly
1 Tbsp. steak seasoning
1 Tbsp. seasoning of your choice (Italian seasoning, hot sauce, sriracha, fresh basil, rosemary, etc.)
1/2 red onion, chopped
Instructions
Place the ground beef in a bowl and add the desired amount of steak seasoning. Mix thoroughly with your hands. Some people do not care to touch meat with their bare hands, so if this is you, wear some gloves to mix the meat.
When the meat is thoroughly mixed, divide the meat into eight balls. This will render four stuffed burgers.
Form the meatballs into eight patties. The patties must be made fairly thin because the burgers require two patties per burger. Place the patties on a cookie sheet.
In a medium-sized bowl or the bowl of a food processor, combine the softened butter, steak seasoning, red onion, pecans and additional seasoning of your choice. On this day, I used some tabasco as my additional seasoning. Mix the butter and seasonings together until well combined. You could use an electric mixer to aid with this task if you do not have a food processor. Taste to adjust seasoning.
Place a large spoonful of the pecan mixture on top of four of the patties. You may have some filling left over that freezes well for later use.
Place another burger patty over the patty with the pecan mixture and seal well. Even though it may appear that the patties are sealed together, do not be surprised that the seams break apart while cooking.
And the rest, as they say, is history. You can grill the burgers immediately or place them into a freezer bag for a future meal. Top with whatever toppings your family and friends love and enjoy this American tradition!
I served these on the new Keto Hamburger Buns from Aldi! These are amazing buns for Keto! Happy Dance!
