When was the last time you saw a movie in the theater? We love going to the movies!. The movie theaters shut down for a while last year at the beginning of the pandemic, but they opened back up, but people did not swarm to the movie theaters to watch the next blockbuster because there weren’t. Theaters had movies to see, but I would call the releases lacklusters not blockbusters. Out of desperation, we went to see some that were showing, like Wonder Woman, but it had some serious plot issues and was not even worth it. We saw a few others, but I can’t even remember their titles, so they definitely were not that memorable.
Hollywood has delayed the releases of all the really good movies until now. I can see why they did it. If an audience is not willing to show up, then they will lose millions in potential profit. Recently, blockbusters are starting to show up at the box office. From the looks of the previews, moviegoers will be making up for lost time with all the blockbusters that have been delayed. Good movies are starting to show up one after the other. The one everyone has been waiting for is Black Widow, which is part of The Avengers series by Marvel/Disney. This one was supposed to be released on May 7, 2020. It is one year and two months past its original release date. It is definitely worth the wait!!
We decided to treat ourselves to the experience by viewing Black Widow in the IMAX theater. The audience was still scant, but the parking lot at the theater showed that there were plenty of people at the movie theater. People are starting to get out more. Hallelujah! Disney, who owns the Marvel franchise, also made the decision to simultaneously release the movie on their channel, Disney+, so those who do not want to venture out just yet can still enjoy the blockbuster at home.
If you don’t know, Black Widow is a Marvel character that is part of The Avengers superheroes. She doesn’t have any superpowers other than the skills she acquired as a supersoldier spy for the Russian government. The plot provides insight into her origins. Scarlet Johanson reprises her role as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. The movie is set in the time immediately after Captain America Civil War, which came out in 2016. Johanson’s character is on the run after violating the Sokovia Accords and that is where the movie begins. The story takes Black Widow in several cities across the world to sort out her family history and the conspiracy associated with them.
The plot line is solid and the action sequences and CGI effects are phenomenal. The script is sprinkled with just enough humor to keep it interesting. Some familiar faces fill the roles of the other characters. Rachel Wiesz, most notably from the Mummy movie series, plays Romanoff’s mother. David Harbour, most recently seen in the Netflix series Stranger Things, plays Romanoff’s father. William Hurt plays a minor role as the agent who is pursuing Black Widow.
Don’t leave your seats when the credits begin to roll; there are a lot of credits to roll, so be patient. In true Marvel fashion, there is one final scene that sets up what is to come. This series is not over yet! I, for one, hope they can continue the Avengers franchise for some time especially if they are as good as this one.
