Tartar sauce from the grocery store is some mayonnaise with a few specks of pickle relish mixed in. Homemade tartar sauce is soooooo much better than that. A few simple ingredients and a little extra zing take tartar sauce to a new level. You can halve or multiply this recipe, depending on your needs.
Ingredients
1 cup mayonnaise (I use Blue Plate, but everyone has a favorite. Use your favorite brand.)
1/2 cup dill pickle relish
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. sugar or sweetener
Pinch of black pepper
1 Tbsp. grated onion
Optional: 3 drops of Tabasco or other hot sauce
Instructions
In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise and lemon juice. Stir to combine.

Add the sweetener, pickle relish, pepper and grated onion. Stir to combine. If using hot sauce, add at this time and stir.

Taste to adjust the seasonings and serve. This tartar sauce is perfect as an accompaniment to any kind of seafood, especially crab cakes.
