If you are in Las Vegas, it will be difficult to choose a Cirque du Soleil performance because there are quite a few from which to choose. Cirque du Soleil Mystere is the oldest Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas that hails all the way back to the early 1990s. Mystere was the first permanent resident show in Las Vegas and is now showing at Treasure Island Resort.
The show’s longevity is marked by pre-show interactive comedy. As the audience finds their seats, two baby strollers are parked on the stage comes with some cooing baby noises. Also, a spotlight is shown on what appears as an usher leading various people to their seats; however, the joke is on them because this particular usher is a trickster. He is very entertaining.
I wish I had read some background information about the show beforehand because it would have helped tremendously. The program is about the origins of life and the preoccupation that humans have within the universe using themes from mythology. The MC seemed to speak French to the audience, but after reading a synopsis of the show, he was actually speaking gibberish that only sounded like French. The unintelligible language of the MC added to the comedy and air of mystery to the show.
The music was fantastic throughout the entire show. Vocalists and a small live orchestra appeared on platforms high above the crowd as the cast performed below. The costumes are inventive and birdlike.
Even without the back story, the show was impressive. From feats of strength, acrobatics, costumes, music, dancing, trapeze and some comedy,to the spectacular finale, this show has stood the test of time and has entertained thousands and thousands of people.
