Review: The Equalizer 3

The Equalizer 3 was one of those movies that I went to see because we wanted to see something at the theater and there wasn’t much to choose from. I was kind of on the fence about it, but we had seen the first two films in this series, so why not?

Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, known as The Equalizer. The film also stars Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar and Remo Gerome. Filming began on the Amalfi Coast and Naples in Italy. Antoine Fuqua directed the film as he did the previous Equalizer films.

The movie starts off in Sicily when a crime boss finds almost all of his henchmen dead at his winery. Those that are left lead him to the basement where Robert McCall has been captured and held. McCall kills the crime boss and the remaining henchmen. Robert’s main purpose is to obtain a key to the vault in the basement to recover millions of dollars stolen in a cyber heist. As he is leaving the winery, the crime boss’s grandson shoots McCall. He is able to take the ferry to the Amalfi Coast and drive further until he passes out from his wound. McCall is found by a policeman who brings him to Altamonte for medical care froma retired doctor. As Robert recuperates and gains strength, he falls in love with the townspeople and the town. He soon realizes that the townspeople and businesses are terrorized by the Camorra, an Italian mafia. Robert takes it upon himself to save the town from those terrorizing them.

The cast for The Equalizer 3 was selected by November 2022. Filming occurred on the Amalfi Coast, Naples and Rome in Italy. Anotone Fuqua directed the film. Sony Pictures distributed the movie on September 1, 2023. It is now streaming on video-on-demand services. The Equalizer 3 has grossed $177 million worldwide, which was better than expected. The critical response to the film was mostly positive.

I found this movie to be ultra-violent and somewhat predictable. It followed the same type of storyline as the previous Equalizer films, so there was no surprise there. A little twist at the end of the movie made it a little more interesting. The acting was great, though. Who doesn’t love Denzel Washington? I’m going to give 3 out of 5 stars for The Equalizer 3.
