Keto bread is a little sketchy sometimes. When you find a good store-bought Keto loaf bread that doesn’t have the taste and texture of rubber, you should stick with it. It’s going to cost ya’ though. Keto bread is not cheap. Aldi sells theirs for $3.99 a loaf. The Aldi bread tastes pretty good. Other companies, like Orowheat and Nature’s Own, are starting to jump on the Keto bandwagon with their own versions. The Orowheat Keto bread is the best in taste and texture, but my Kroger was selling it at $5.99 a loaf. Ouch!! Nature’s Own recently released a Honey Wheat Keto bread for $3.44 at Walmart. That’s a good price, but is almost double the carbs as in the Orowheat and Aldi bread, totaling 12 carbs per slice. I have purchased a loaf, but have not yet tried it. It has honey in it, which is not on the approved list of Keto foods. Just because it says it is Keto-friendly on the front of the package does not make it so. It’s a little misleading. Keto peeps must read labels.
Keto bread made at home can come out eggy tasting, which is not very appealing to the taste buds. I like bread, and I like eggs, but I don’t like eggy bread. I have experimented with making a loaf of bread at home, and the results were a disaster, so I would rather buy loaf bread at the store.
This beer bread recipe is good. It does not have an eggy flavor. Most Keto bread is crumbly because almond flour is a key ingredient, so this beer bread is a good accompaniment bread and not intended for sandwiches. To cut down on the eggy flavor, I use some egg whites in the dough, resulting in a less eggy flavor. Another issue with homemade Keto bread is that it doesn’t rise at all when it bakes. The level of dough or batter in the bread pan is as high as it will get when it bakes, so I like to double the recipe to make it more voluminous.
Keeping these issues in mind, batter bread is the way to go if you want some bread to complement a meal. Stick to the store-bought stuff for sandwiches. You can’t go wrong with those for sandwiches, The following recipe for Low Carb Beer Bread lists the doubled ingredients for you. The only reason it is labeled low carb and not Keto is because of the beer. I used a low-carb beer, Michelob Ultra, which is lower in carbs than other beers. If you must follow a gluten-free diet, you can use a gluten-free beer.
Ingredients
4 cups almond flour
2 Tbsp. coconut flour
2 Tbsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. Swerve
1 tsp. salt
2 large whole egg
2 egg whites
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 bottle low carb beer (Michelob Ultra recommended)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine the almond flour, coconut flour, baking powder, Swerve and salt.
Add the whole eggs, egg whites and butter. Stir until batter forms. Add the beer and stir until incorporated. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick placed in the center comes out clean.
Slice and serve hot with some butter. Delicious!
