Savory Salisbury Steak

Rate this post

There may be no shortage of Salisbury Steak recipes out there, but this is one of those dishes that feels more like second nature than something you have to follow step-by-step. I first started making it years ago without a recipe, using simple ingredients, a little intuition, and a craving for something hearty and comforting. Sometimes the best meals come together that way.

Over time, this Savory Salisbury Steak has become a true family favorite. Tender, seasoned beef patties are simmered in a rich, flavorful gravy that’s perfect for spooning over mashed potatoes or your favorite low-carb sides. It’s the kind of meal that fills the kitchen with warmth and brings everyone to the table.

Whether you’re making it from memory or trying it for the first time, this classic comfort food proves that you don’t need anything complicated to create something truly satisfying.

Ingredients

1-1/2 pounds ground beef

1 palmful of Montreal steak seasoning

Extra virgin olive oil for frying

1 large onion, halved and sliced

1 package fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 cup beef broth

2 Tbsp. cornstarch or Carbquick

Instructions

In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the Montreal steak seasoning.

Shape the ground beef mixture into oval-shaped patties.

Drizzle some olive oil in the bottom of a frying pan and heat it. Fry the patties in the oil until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees. The patties should be cooked all the way through with no pink in the middle. When the patties are cooked, remove them from the pan and keep them warm.

To the same frying pan, add the onions and mushrooms. Cook until the onions are caramelized and the moisture has cooked off a little.

Sprinkle the cornstarch over the onions and mushrooms; then, whisk in the broth and stir until thickened.

Add the patties back to the frying pan and spoon the gravy over the tops. Cook until the Salisbury steaks are heated through and serve immediately. I like to serve these with mashed cauliflower and green beans; however, mashed potatoes are good, too.

This is comfort food!
