These are the best green beans! I have two versions: one is a version I make for weeknights, and the other is a fancier version that I make for special occasions. The only difference between the two versions is a couple of ingredients. One is not better than the other; they are both delicious.
When I am invited to a potluck, this green bean recipe is the recipe that everyone asks me for. You can make it with canned, frozen or fresh beans with similar results. If I am taking these beans on the road, I will make a fancier version of it with fresh green beans, but for a weeknight, I may use canned or frozen beans, depending on what I might have on hand. For now, this recipe is the weekday version. I will post the fancier version another time.
Ingredients
1 large onion, chopped
2 Tbsp. bacon grease or Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 cans cut green beans, drained, or 1 bag of frozen green beans
1/4 cup soy sauce
Sesame seeds
Instructions
Heat the bacon grease or olive oil in a medium saucepan. Add the onion and sauté until translucent.
Add the beans. On this day, I used frozen green beans. Stir to combine with the onions.
Add the soy sauce and stir. I have made this recipe so many times that I just eyeball the amount of soy sauce. Place a lid on the saucepan and cook for 10-15 minutes until heated through. Placing the lid on the pan is especially important if you are using frozen green beans.
Just before serving, sprinkle a generous amount of sesame seeds over the top of the green beans. The sesame seeds add the slightest bit of a crunch and provide a contrast in color.
This is a great side dish for almost any meal!
