This recipe is a twist on sloppy joes from a Foodnetwork Star contest winner. I modified the original recipe to suit my family’s tastes. If you are looking for something a little different, try this recipe. The flavors elevate the usual sloppy joe ingredients to a new level.

2 Tbsp. vegetable oil

1 Tbsp. ginger paste

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 serrano pepper, seeded and finely minced and divided

1 tsp. garam masala

1/2 tsp. Paprika

1 15 oz can tomato sauce

1 cup water

3-4 Tbsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. cumin seeds

1/2 large onion, finely diced

1 red bell pepper, finely diced

Kosher salt

1 lb. ground turkey

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup cilantro, chopped

4-6 Keto hamburger buns

In a saucepan, heat the oil. Add the ginger, garlic and serrano pepper. Saute until the ginger and garlic brown.

Add the garam masala and paprika and stir.

Add the tomato sauce and water. Bring to a boil; reduce the heat and simmer until thickened, about 15 minutes.

In the same pan, heat 1 or 2 more tablespoons of oil. Add the cumin seeds and toast for about 10 seconds. Stir in the onions and bell pepper; saute until softened and starting to brown. Add the serrano pepper. Saute for a couple of minutes, seasoning with a little salt.

Stir in the turkey.. Cook until opaque, about 5 minutes. Pour the sauce into the skillet with the turkey. Stir and boil; then, lower the heat and simmer until the mixture has thickened slightly, about 10 minutes.

Once the turkey is cooked and the sauce has thickened, remove the serrano pepper. Add the honey, half-and-half, pistachios, and raisins. Stir and taste for seasoning. Stir in fresh cilantro before serving. Toast the buns, fill them with the turkey mixture, and serve.
